Chalki – Naxos' Old Capital

Chalki was once the island's capital, a bustling hub of activity. Nowadays, it's like a living museum where every step you take echoes with tales of the past.

It is one of the little wonders of Greece. First you are not sure what you are supposed to see of find in a place. It's just nothing special ... until you turn around the corner and find yourself in the middle of a cheesy ABBA musical: cobblestone streets, charming Venetian architecture, and a vibe that screams history.

Now, let's dive into some facts. Chalki is located in the heart of Naxos and was the capital from the 9th to the 19th century. The name itself is said to be derived from the Greek word "chalkos," meaning copper. Why copper? Well, legend has it that the area was rich in copper mines back in the day.

As you stroll through the narrow streets, you'll encounter noteworthy sites like the Church of Panagia Protothroni, a beautiful Byzantine church adorned with frescoes that transport you straight into the island's history. And don't forget to check out the Venetian tower – a silent witness to centuries of stories.

Chalki may not be the bustling capital anymore, but its historical charm and cultural richness make it a must-visit for any history buff like yourself. It's a place where the whispers of the past resonate in every corner, inviting you to step back in time and soak in the vibes of ancient Naxos. Happy exploring!

Plenty of nice restaurants, cafés and bar and a lovely atmosphere. And boy, they probably do have the biggest kebab skewer I have ever seen.
