I have visited Bucharest around 15 years ago and I can't remember any other city that has changed as much as Bucharest during this period. Possibly Berlin. But Bucharest did not and doesn't have the financial powerhouse of (West) Germany investing in the capital.

In the 2000s, stories of street kids, stray dogs with rabies and horrible orphanages made the rounds in the news. In 2007, when Romania joined the European Union, many were asking aloud, if the country was ready to join the club and initially, they may have been right. Today, I have no doubt that Romania absolutely deserves its place in the Union, Schengen and even the Eurozone.
