Balcón de Europa
Perched dramatically on a cliff above the azure waters of the Mediterranean, This iconic promenade offers visitors panoramic vistas that stretch from the rugged coastline to the distant Sierra Almijara mountains, making it a must-visit spot for anyone exploring the Costa del Sol.
Honestly, when booking a room in Nerja, the mention and reviews of the Balcon and even the name seemed irritating at first. How different would a cliff like many others in Spain and around the Mediterranean be. But it is quite exceptional, as the the old town seems to be build around the the cliff. Or the cliff is naturally integrated into the cityscape of the town. It looks like one of those infinity pools, only that it isn't a pool, but a boulevard seemingly leading into the sunset. Photos won't do it justice, you really have to see for yourself.
On both sides of the balcón, you have a wonderfull view of some of the many beaches the town is famous for.
The name "Balcón de Europa" was bestowed by King Alfonso XII after a visit in the late 19th century, when he was struck by the breathtaking beauty of the location. Standing at the edge, it's easy to see why. The stunning, uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean are nothing short of mesmerizing, especially at sunset when the sky turns into a canvas of pinks and oranges.
Beyond its stunning vistas, the Balcón de Europa is a vibrant hub of activity. The promenade is lined with cafes, restaurants, and ice cream shops, perfect for a leisurely snack or a refreshing helado. Street performers and artists often set up shop here, adding a lively atmosphere to the scene. Whether you're indulging in a delicious seafood dish or just people-watching, the Balcón offers a delightful slice of Nerja's everyday life.
The Balcón de Europa is also the starting point for exploring some of Nerja's beautiful beaches. From here, you can easily stroll down to Playa Calahonda or Playa El Salón, where you can bask in the sun or take a dip in the crystal-clear waters. The area around the Balcón is rich in history too, with remnants of the old fortress that once stood here, adding a layer of intrigue to your visit.
The Balcón de Europa isn't just a viewpoint—it's an experience. Whether you're soaking in the views, enjoying a meal, or simply relaxing on a bench, this spot offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and vibrant local life. It's a place that captures the essence of Nerja, making it a must-see on any trip to this beautiful corner of Spain. So, grab your camera, a pair of sunglasses, and let the Balcón de Europa sweep you off your feet!
