The art collection of the Essl family was housed in its own museum (Essl Museum) just outside the city limits of Vienna. When the businesses of the Essl Family went bankrupt, it was decided that with the help of several legal constructions of no concern to us and another wealthy Austrian business should be transferred to Albertina, one of the most important graphic art museums in the world.
By uniting the collections of contemporary art of Albertina and the Essls, the sheer size of the combined collections required a location of their own. Luckily, Künstlerhaus was available and coincidentally owned by the wealthy Austrian businessman and voilà, Albertina modern was born.
